The American Society for Pharmacy Law (ASPL) is an organization of attorneys, pharmacists, pharmacist-attorneys and students of pharmacy or law who are interested in the law as it applies to pharmacy, pharmacists, wholesalers, manufacturers, state and federal government and other interested parties. Latest NewsMay 14, 2024 Drug Channels issued an update to its annual chart on vertical integration of insurers, PBMs, specialty pharmacies, and providers. The chart includes Blue Cross Blue Shield, Centene Corporation, The Cigna Group, CVS Health, Elevance Health, Humana, United Health Group, and integrated companies. According to the publication, “[t]he companies face renewed scrutiny from the Federal Trade Commission, the Office of Inspector General, and members of Congress.” Drug Channels reported on the significance of vertical integration, for example noting that 62% of Optum Rx’s revenues originated within UnitedHealthcare Group. Drug Channels also summarized recent mergers and acquisitions, and stated that the FTC may be issuing preliminary results of its study on PBMs this summer under Section 6(b) of the FTC Act. The Drug Channels analysis comes on the heels of a March 2024 report by OIG HHS on the effects of vertical integration on Medicare Part D, as well as upcoming audit results of Medicare Part D vertical integration, expected in FY 2026.
